Chapter 9: Nourishment

The function of this system is to transport nourishment around to every part of the body. When a person feels cold and tired, either physically or emotionally, it can be a sign that the circulation is sluggish. Every part of the body needs an effective blood supply for correct functioning and, as circulation benefits enormously from movement, clients can help themselves with the introduction of appropriate exercise into their lifestyle.

Reflexology directly connects with the body’s circulation touching the extremities of this all-important system on the hands and the feet. In traditional Chinese medicine the quality of the blood and circulation is a primary diagnostic sign of health and illness. The Nei Ching, a text on ancient Chinese medicine, states that the pulse can be,

“…sharp as a hook, fine as a hair, taut as a musical string, dead as a rock, smooth as a flowing stream or as continuous as a string of pearls.” (Majno, 1975)

It is interesting to note that these words quite accurately describe the sensitive responses often felt during reflexology treatment. Much more accurately, in fact, than Western words, which often seem to be too analytical and measured.
